Artificial Intelligence (AI) Use Policy

The journal Vivienda y Comunidades Sustentables recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) tools can support various activities related to research and scientific communication. Their use is permitted provided it is carried out ethically, transparently, and responsibly and is explicitly declared.

For Authors

Authors must explicitly declare the use of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, or similar) in their manuscript whenever such tools have been employed in drafting text, analyzing information, processing data, or generating written content, images, or other materials.

Additionally, authors must individually declare the use of AI in the originality statement submitted with their work. This declaration must specify the tool used, its version (where possible), the research stages during which it was employed, and the specific purpose of its use.

AI tools may not be listed as authors or co-authors of published works, as they do not meet academic authorship criteria. Responsibility for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and academic quality of the content rests exclusively with the authors.

Any dispute arising from the use of AI shall be the responsibility of the author who declared its use. The journal, its editorial team, and the publishing institution assume no liability regarding the results, content, or potential implications arising from such use.

For the Editorial Team

The editorial team may use AI tools to support administrative tasks, communication, information analysis, the generation of internal reports, or the creation of outreach materials. In all cases, supervision of and responsibility for the results lie with the editorial team member using said tools.

For Reviewers

Manuscripts submitted for evaluation are confidential documents. Consequently, reviewers must not input text, data, images, or any unpublished content from the manuscripts into generative AI systems in order to protect the confidentiality of the peer-review process. The use of generative or AI-assisted systems, tools, or applications—in any form—for the full or partial preparation of reports, comments, observations, recommendations, or any other input forming part of the peer review process is strictly prohibited.

Reports must be prepared personally and grounded in the evaluators' academic judgment. AI tools may only be used to improve the wording or presentation of comments previously drafted by the reviewer themselves, provided that no confidential information from the manuscript is shared.

Final provisions

The journal may request clarifications or additional information regarding the use of AI at any stage of the editorial process when deemed necessary.

This policy will be periodically reviewed and updated by the Editorial Committee to address technological advancements and best practices in scientific communication.
