The concept of popular architecture is worked on and is defined as a result of a tension between the vernacular and modern ways of life, government, religiosity and economy. Through a case study of El Castillo de la Salud, a building for commercial purpose in the nahua community of Ahuacatila, San Luis Potosí, and through an interpretive analysis, it is shown how popular architecture differs from the vernacular and the erudite. The limitations of the work lie in being a case study, which is why both scientific sources that have studied it tangentially, both synchronically and diachronically, as well as several analogous examples, were used to consolidate the following three points in this regard: one, that some of the designs popular, as is the case studied here, are discourses of indigenous modernity that structure those involved in the work to make a space for themselves in an urbanized world, figuring it, that is, designing it, taking their cultural capitals as a reference to use them creatively; two, it shows how popular designs are inserted in a cross-cultural conflict, so that they are not spontaneous, innocent or free acts; and three, the existence of key actors who can be considered authors of the work is highlighted, which does not mean that they are the only ones involved in it or that the work does not continue to be reconfigured over time, so that it is an architecture that is not anonymous. The need to study what is popular in a dialectical way is defended.Metrics
