Digital preservation policies

Perpetual access and preservation of the journal's contents is guaranteed, by storing it on secure servers, and technical requirements are met to guarantee interoperability with other information systems. The actions that are carried out to guarantee the preservation of its content are:

Daily and weekly backups to guarantee data recovery in the event of a fortuitous event. Copies are periodically sent to other locations to provide geographically dispersed copies. All of which are validated to ensure the correct preservation of its content. They are also stored in the cloud through paid subscriptions in Dropbox and Google Drive.

Periodic checks of the integrity of its content, to ensure that it has not been modified since its deposit. It is planned to extend this check to detect the presence of viruses that may affect the integrity of the files.

The Sustainable Housing and Communities website, based on Open Journal Systems, is compatible with the LOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) system that guarantees the magazine a permanent and secure archive. LOCKSS is an open source program developed by the Stanford University Library that enables libraries to preserve selected web journals by regularly searching registered journals to collect and archive newly published content. Each file is continually validated against records from other libraries, so any damaged or lost content can be restored using those records or the journal itself. LOCKSS has been enabled to store and distribute journal content in partner libraries through the LOCKSS Editorial Manifesto Page.

The CLOCKSS (Controlled Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe) system has also been enabled to guarantee a permanent and safe archive for the journal. CLOCKSS is based on the open source LOCKSS software developed at the Stanford University Library, which enables libraries to preserve chosen web journals by regularly checking registered journal web sites for recently published content and archiving it. Each file is constantly validated against other library caches, and if the content is found to have been corrupted or lost, the other caches or the magazine are used to restore it. CLOCKSS therefore allows the content of Sustainable Housing and Communities to be stored and distributed to the participating libraries through the CLOCKSS Editorial Manifesto Page.
